Roger Williams entre os Narragansetts [Roger Williams among Narragansetts]

Abstract

"Este artigo apresenta resultados parciais de nossa pesquisa de mestrado sobre Roger Williams, personagem da colonização dos EUA do século XVII. Pouco conhecido e pouco pesquisado no Brasil, Roger Williams se destacou por lutar pela liberdade de pensamento e separação entre Igreja e Estado. A recuperação da sua memória neste trabalho tem o objetivo de analisar seu relacionamento com os Índios Narragansetts e sua luta pelos direitos destes, buscando identificar em seu pensamento, críticas ao sistema puritano que negava a alteridade dos índios. A partir o referencial teóricometodológico da Filosofia da Libertação de Enrique Dussel, buscamos qualificar seu pensamento como crítico e anticolonial. A importância de estudarmos experiências como de Roger Williams a partir da América Latina, se justifica pela necessidade e emergência de identificarmos lugares hermenêuticos idênticos, que sejam promotores da dignidade humana e da tolerância diante da alteridade" ["This paper presents partial results of our master degree’s research about Roger Williams, an important person in the colonization of the United States during the seventeenth century. Roger Williams, not well-known and researched in Brazil, was renowned for fighting for independent thinking and the separation of the church and state. The remembrance of his legacy in this paper has the goal to analyze his relationship with the natives of the Narragansett tribe and his fight for their rights, as well as to identify William’s critics to the Puritan system, which refused to respect the natives’ differences. From the theoretical and methodological perspective of the Philosophy of Liberation by Enrique Dussel, we identified Williams’ thoughts as critical and anticolonial. The importance of studying Williams experiences for Latin America is justified for the necessity and urgency of identifying identical hermeneutical locus that would promote the ideals of human dignity and tolerance of differences’"]
