Abstract
The first members of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, founded early in the second half of the 19th Century, did not seek to live long in this world: they believed that Christ would return soon, literally, and that the biblical prophecies as they studied would be fulfilled in that generation. Thus, there was not an intention to “blend into the world” by those pioneers, men and women, except under the aegis of preaching the Gospel and disclosure of prophecies. However, paradoxically, those Americans have lived as children of their own time, using the current technology for their own purposes, but resisting before the culture that did not fit in their narrow paradigms. Over the years and due to the not coming of Christ, the widespread escape from the world combined to the growing disenchantment of their modus operandi – increasingly distant from the lifestyle of the followers – forced to revisit their initial assumptions. The lines of this article have as main objective to analyze briefly how that Christian denomination, throughout its history, has experienced this dialectic and what are the perspectives to avoid the spraying of their early ideals in the current days"]
