Abstract
"In 1861, the Advent Review and Sabbath Herald2 featured an article written by J. A. Mowatt, 'Women as Preachers and ~ecturers,"re~p rinted from the Portadown Nms. The Review carried the piece with an introduction written by the editor, Uriah Smith, that indicated the enthusiastic support of the official organ of the Sabbatarian Adventist believers for Mowatt's thesis that 'neither Paul nor any other apostle forbade women preaching, or lecturing." Mowatt had contended that "such a command is nowhere in the Bible, and I shall proceed to prove it; and, besides, I will prove that Paul taught the very opposite""
