Abstract
"Matthew used the pericope of the double love command, love to God and neighbor, to summarize Jesus' teachings, as well as the laws of Moses, and to continue to demonstrate Jesus' prowess as a teacher in the presence of his Pharisaic opponents. This article sets forth the reasons for his doing so as well as the method used to accomplish this. Parallels to Matt 22:34-40 are found in Mark 12:28-34 and Luke 10:25- 28. It is not necessary here to do a full analysis of these parallels nor to determine the exact tradition behind the Synoptics. This has been done by Furnish, Fuller, Hultgren, and numerous others"
