AbstractIn this visiting lecture, Associate Professor Kathy Mills presented her recent international research contributions to literacy studies and digital culture in education: multimodal literacies and Indigenous epistemology, the digital turn in socio-cultural literacy studies, power and socio-spatial literacies in classrooms, and key principles of multimodal semiotics in children’s learning (including transmediation). The session included Kathy Mills’ original theory of sensory literacies from her highly acclaimed new book “Literacy Theories for the Digital Age”, which foregrounds the forgotten embodied dimensions of literacy practices and visual dominance in Western scholarship. These concepts were discussed with reference to funded ARC research projects and her publications in international books and journals, including Review of Education Research, Written Communication, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Language and Education, and the Australasian Journal of Early Childhood.
