Pharr, (706) 542-5172 WINTER/SPRING EVENTS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA SCHOOL OF LAW ATHENS, Ga. -- 1. The University of Georgia School of Law won the 47th Annual National Moot Court Competition January 30 in New York City, the second time UGA has claimed the prestigious national championship in the 1990s. UGA also won the national title in 1992, reached the semifinals in 1994, and placed second in the competition last year. The University of Georgia holds the record as the only law school in the nation to have reached the quarterfinals of the national competition for seven consecutive years. Other moot court championships of the '96-97 season include: the 26th Annual William B. Spong Invitational at the College of William and Mary, the ABA Regional Competition, and the National First Amendment Moot Court Competition at Vanderbilt University. By virtue of its regional ABA co-championship, UGA advances to the national finals in Austin, Texas in August. 2. The University of Georgia School of Law won the national championship in the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA) Mock Trial Competition in Denver, Colorado, March 21-23. 3. The University of Georgia School of Law paid tribute to Louis B. Sohn, one of the world's foremost international law scholars, on February 28 when it convened a colloquium of renowned young scholars, dedicated an international law library, and presented a portrait in his honor. Sohn, UGA's Emily and Ernest Woodruff Professor of International Law Emeritus, taught at the law school for a decade before leaving in 1991 to join the U.S. Institute of Peace as a Jennings Randolph Distinguished Fellow. He currently continues his research program at the George Washington National Law Center, where he supervises a select group of students. The colloquium, "International Law for a New Millennium," featured younger international law scholars with established reputations: Professor José E. Alvarez, University of Michigan; Professor Ruth E. Gordon, Villanova University; Professor S. James Anaya, University of Iowa; Professor Allyn Taylor, consultant to the World Health Organization; Professor Daniel M. Bodansky, University of Washington; and Professor Jarat Chopra, Brown University. The panelists were moderated by Thomas J. Schoenbaum, the director of the Dean Rusk Center for International and Comparative Law and Rusk Professor of Law, and by Gabriel M. Wilner, Associate Dean for International and Graduate Legal Studies and Kirbo Professor of International Law. The Louis B. Sohn International Law Library includes nearly 3,700 monographs donated from Prof. Sohn's personal library collection. It is located in the law school's new addition, Dean Rusk Hall. 4. Carol Rose, the Gordon Bradford Tweedy Professor of Law and Organization at Yale Law School, presented the 86th John A. Sibley Lecture at the University of Georgia School of Law on April 4. Rose's lecture, "Strategies for Conservation: From Ancient Hunting to Global Warming," also served as the keynote address for the Red Clay Conference, a student-organized environmental law conference. -30-
