La utopía de una enseñanza bilingüe destinada al aborigen en la Argentina del siglo XIX

Abstract

The idea of a formal bilingual education addressed to the natives as a way to integrate them into the hegemonic society and, at the same time, instruir them in their own language was conceived in Argentina in the years of the Independence revolution. However, during the 19th century, the ideological changes embodied, mainly, by the 80´s generation did not allow this project to become a reality. On the contrary, this idea should be regarded as a 19th century utopia. Nowadays, people set on vindicating aborigines´ rights are still fighting so that they could get bilingual education to be able to interact and participate in the work and cultural world as any otherArgentinian citizen would, but without having to give up their own traditions and knowledge. In this essay, we will analyze to what extent this idea of equality and brotherhood, respectful for the multiplicity of languages and communities that inhabit our land became a utopia during the 19th century; and we shall do this in the light of the concepts of utopia and ideology by Paul Ricoeur and the analysis of the linguistic map, complex and multilingual, that the society in Argentina presented at the time.

La idea de una enseñanza formal bilingüe dirigida al aborigen como modo de integrarlo a la sociedad hegemónica y, a la vez, instruirlo en su propia lengua fue concebida, en laArgentina, en los años de la lucha por la Independencia. Sin embargo, durante el siglo XIX, los cambios ideológicos encarnados, principalmente, por la generación del ´80 no permitieron que este proyecto se concretara. Por el contrario, debe ser considerado como una utopía del siglo XIX. Hoy, quienes reivindican los derechos de las comunidades aborígenes siguen luchando para que ellas puedan tener una educación formal bilingüe que les permita interactuar yparticipar del mundolaboral y cultural como cualquier otro argentino lo haría, pero sin tener que renunciar a sus saberes y tradiciones. En este ensayo, analizaremos cómo esta idea de igualdad y hermandad, respetuosa de la multiplicidad de lenguas y comunidades que habitaban nuestro territorio llegó a ser una utopía durante el siglo XIX; y lo haremos a la luz de los conceptos de utopía e ideología de Paul Ricoeur y del análisis del mapa lingüístico, complejo y plurilingüe, que presentaba la sociedad argentina del momento.
