The Scottish element of an International Project, Pedagogies of Education Transitions is titled ‘Transitions as Tools for Change’: the focus is on three strands: children’s transitions journeys, family engagement and practitioner beliefs and practices. It is in this context that there is an opportunity to look at the more hidden contributors to children’s well-being and successful navigation of early childhood: currently the contribution of childminding is less visible than it should be. The focus of this presentation is therefore on the consultation process undertaken with 12 childminders on their approaches to supporting children in transition: the results will inform the design of a Scottish wide study which aims to understand whether a focus on transitions enhances the contribution of childminders to child and family well being, continuity of care over time, support for parents facing challenges in their lives, as well as for those who are working and in need regular out-of-home care for their children. The first phase of this study was conducted between June and August 2015: this paper will be the first presentation of the data.
