High School Graduates’ Perceptions of College Readiness

Abstract

While college enrollment is expected of many high school graduates, adequate high school preparation continues to be questioned by many post secondary educational institutions. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand first year college students’ perceptions of their high school preparation for college success. The participants had not taken college level courses while attending this small rural mid-Atlantic high school, yet they attended a two- or four-year college. Qualitative methodologies allowed for the participants to share their individual experiences, and the researcher to collect data through individual interviews, a focus group, and field notes. Data analysis resulted in the emergence of five themes and multiple subthemes. The five themes that emerged were: supportive connections, role of the school counselor, academic expectations, essential resources, and work habits. The participants perceived that they were prepared for the academic content and use of technology. They perceived inadequately prepared with work habits, knowledge of resources, and guidance during the transition to college. The participants stressed the importance of personal connections and communication. This study produced several implications for various school personnel which could generate thoughtful reflection of potential influences on the college readiness of high school graduates.
