Abstract
Epidemiology is a fundamental science that can enrich our understanding of the natural world in which we live; it has been described as a liberal art or one of the humanities, because it can be an instrument of social justice; it is the basis for health planning and policy-making, an essential element in the quest for Health for All, especially in developing countries. Like other sciences, epidemiology is not "value-free" but colored by and reflective of cultures, customs, traditions in the place where it is practiced. Wherever and however it is conducted, epidemiology involves people, and must abide by the same rules of conduct that govern other aspects of human intercourse. Variations in these rules imposed by the special circumstances of epidemiological practice and research do not erode this reality.Date
