Abstract
« Tcheb-Tchib » and CompanyOver the past twenty years, a new category has emerged in the Mauritanian vocabulary: tcheb tchab. This term designates a resourceful person who goes to all lengths to succeed, and encompasses a whole constellation of practices associated with the art of opportunity-seeking. Associated with the figure of the el-gazra, the practices of the tcheb-tchib have spread through all strata of society, becoming a veritable moral economy in this time of austerity which has greatly influenced representations of the state. Nonetheless, being unevenly institutionalized, this moral economy of cunning might also indicate a process of « civilisation des mœurs ».
