Abstract
The original question concerns the instinctive estimation of the proper relationship to the Other and to oneself. For man, the animal seems to ensure this relationship. What about the person whose relationship to instinct has been thrown off track by inadequate educational methods ? He can take the path between the images of the wild and domestic animal, through dream representations or diurnal fantasies. The function of the image within the psyche is reinforced by the contents considered here — the wild animal — associating representations to instinct. Instinct, in addition to organizing animal behavior, is also the source of dreaming in humans, and, when the value of images can be considered, shores up thef oundations of feeling and an ethical position in relationships with animals.
