Abstract
In contemporary theories of recognition, Hegel is viewed as an initiator. Light can be shed on this contemporary debate by enlisting into it an unexpected participant: Malebranche. From the perspective of the history of philosophy, that reference shows that a political and ethical perspective on Malebranche’s writings enables one to reconsider his place in that very history. From the perspective of contemporary theories of recognition, it allows one to problematize the key issue of the relation between a normative approach and an empirical description of social relations, the psychological dimension of the latter being emphasized here. As a demontration, we compare Axel Honneth’s use of the reference to Hegel in La Lutte pour la reconnaissance and Malebranche’s analysis in books IV and V of La Recherche de la vérité.
