Abstract
...Why was it hard for me to learn compassion as a third-year medical student? I think because, although I was seeing patients and given some responsibility for their care, I was still in medical student mode, fearing failure, knowing that to continue I had to succeed, outdo the others competing for the few places available. And I do not think that it was just a matter that I am less compassionate or more competitive than other third-year medical students. Compassion is not an attribute you either do or do not have. Compassion needs to be taught, nurtured, and cultivated as part of the curriculum....Date
