Raison, passions et conatus chez Spinoza

Abstract

À partir de l’examen des difficultés que Spinoza éprouve lorsqu’il s’agit d’expliquer le fait du « suicide », cet article entend poser les premiers pas pour une archéologie du discours philosophique sur le suicide. En partant d’une définition « vulgaire » du suicide en tant qu’acte volontaire par lequel on s’efforce de supprimer sa propre existence, il faut admettre que, pour Spinoza, il ne saurait y avoir de « suicide » stricto sensu. Autrement dit, il est donc ontologiquement impossible pour tout mode d’agir en vue de sa propre suppression. De ce fait, la détermination à un tel acte doit nécessairement impliquer une cause externe par laquelle on peut aussi l’expliquer. Reste toutefois à savoir si les trois cas dont Spinoza se sert pour exemplifier son explication, rendent effectivement compte d’une telle détermination extrinsèque (E IV 20 S). Or, nous croyons que ce n’est pas le cas et qu’ils impliquent tous un certain paradoxe. C’est aussi pourquoi, afin de mettre au clair les thèses de Spinoza, nous avons tenté de restituer sa position au sein du champ de présence qui était le sien, par la lecture notamment du philosophe hollandais Adriaan Heereboord et du théologien espagnol Juan Caramuel. Par là, nous avons pu constater que la question morale du suicide se tournait en question de légitimité politique. Chez Spinoza, la question du suicide est aussi tributaire d’un questionnement politique implicite. Nous l’avons traité par la figure à peine ébauchée du pendu (E II 49 S).

From an examination of Spinoza's difficulties in explaining the fact of "suicide", this article intends to take the first steps towards an archeology of philosophical discourse on suicide. Starting from a “vulgar” definition of suicide as a voluntary act by which one endeavors to put an end to one's own existence, we are forced to admit that for Spinoza there can be no “suicide” in the strict sense. In other words, it is ontologically impossible to act in any way to effect one's own annihilation. Therefore, the determination to such an act must necessarily involve an external cause by which it can also be explained. It remains to be seen, however, whether the three cases Spinoza uses to exemplify his explanation actually account for such an extrinsic determination (E IV 20 S). Now, we believe that such is not the case and that they all imply a certain paradox. This is also why, in order to clarify Spinoza's theses, we have tried to restore his position within the field of presence that was his, specifically, by a reading of the Dutch philosopher Adriaan Heereboord and of the Spanish theologian Juan Caramuel. By this we have seen that the moral question of suicide becomes a question of political legitimacy. In Spinoza, the question of suicide is also dependent on an implicit political questioning. We have treated it by the barely sketched figure of the hanged man (E II 49 S).
