Small-Group Exercise in Professionalism and Code of Ethics DevelopmentAbstract This resource features a series of interprofessional small-group exercises to explore students' perceptions of the other health professions. During this 3-hour session, groups also discuss the meaning of professional behavior and use the insights gained to develop a shared code of ethics. These codes are made available online so that students can compare their own group's results with other groups across campus. This activity can be scaled to include as many students as needed. Previous sessions have included over 450 students participating in 40–45 small groups. This campus-wide event prepares future health professionals for collaborative patient-centered practice by discussing shared values in ethical/professional behavior. It has been included in orientation week for 2 consecutive years. Students and faculty facilitators indicated on a postsurvey that they appreciated the small-group experience. Student indicated that the opportunity for communication and interaction with other health professions students was essential, rarely done in other forums, and very informative.
Has the new code of ethics for physiotherapists incorporated bioethical trends?<p></p><p>Abstract Advances in health technology incorporate bioethical discussions in texts that address professional care. Would the new code of ethics for physiotherapists have incorporated such discussions? Given the issue, we aimed to verify the ratio of deontological and bioethical approaches in the new code of ethics when compared to the old one, investigating relationships between professional and client autonomies in healthcare. Content analysis methods were applied to written documents in order to verify in what proportion deontological and bioethical approaches are present in the new code. The bioethical approaches compose the large part of the content in this new code (53%) specially related to the justice category which represents 21,9% of the total textual units found. Changes in the new document reveal bioethical influences in the conception of the new code, which still did not modify the relationship between professional and client autonomies, revealing the need for further discussions.</p><p></p>
A code of conduct for sports physiotherapists in New ZealandA reprint of the "Sports Physiotherapy Code of Conduct (SPCC)," with permission from Sports Physiotherapy New Zealand, is presented. Topics discussed include the objective of the SPCC, the relationship between the "Aotearoa New Zealand Physiotherapy Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct" and the SPCC, and various commentaries on several topics including good patient care, relationships with patients, and employment structure and relationships.
Professional Ethics Relationship with Patient’s Rights Charter Observance among Nurses and MidwivesIntroduction: Respect for patients’ rights and observance of professional ethics standards improves medical services that will have an essential role in promoting patients’ health. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between awareness of patient’s rights charter and professional ethics with patient’s rights charter observance. Materials and Methods: This analytical correlational study was performed on 285 staff members (196 nurses and 85 midwives) working in 2 hospitals affiliated to Alborz University of Medical Sciences, Iran, and 2 social security hospitals. They were selected using a stratified random sampling method. The study data were collected using the sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, awareness and observance of the patient’s rights, and professional ethics charter questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including the independent t-test, Pearson correlation, Chi-square tests, and multivariate linear regression, were used for data analysis. Results: The Mean±SD ages of nurses and midwives were 36.2±8.3 and 37.5±7.9 years, respectively. The results also showed an association of professional ethics and awareness of patient’s rights charter with patient’s rights charter observance in both nurses (P=0.0001) and midwives (P=0.0001). Based on multivariate linear regression analysis, there were relationships between gender (B=-0.3; 95%CI; -2.0, 2.0; P=0.000), work experience (B=-0.6; 95%CI; -4.0, 3.0; P=0.000), marital and employment status (B=-3.2; 95%CI; -6.0, -0.0; P=0.045), in nurses and between job position (B=9.5; 95%CI; 5.4, 13.5; P=0.000), interest to work (B=-7.9; 95%CI; -11.5, -4.3; P=0.000), and income status (B=6.3; 95%CI; 3.3, 9.2; P=0.000), in midwives with Observance of the Charter of Patient Rights. Conclusion: It is possible to improve compliance with the charter of patient’s rights and its dimensions by strengthening the knowledge of nurses and midwives in this area and their professional ethics, which results in patient satisfaction in this area.
Nivel de conocimiento del código de ética y deontología en odontólogos de la ciudad de Cusco -2021El presente estudio de investigación tiene como objetivo determinar el nivel de conocimiento del Código de Ética y Deontología en odontólogos de la ciudad de Cusco. Fue un estudio de enfoque cuantitativo, cuyo diseño fue no experimental, de corte transversal y de alcance descriptivo. La muestra estuvo conformada por 254 odontólogos colegiados y habilitados del colegio odontológico de la región Cusco quienes cumplían con los criterios de inclusión. El instrumento utilizado fue un cuestionario de 20 preguntas que ayudó a determinar el nivel de conocimiento de los odontólogos encuestados, la misma que fue validada por el método de juicio de expertos. En la presente investigación se pudo observar que el nivel de conocimiento de los odontólogos respecto al Código de Ética y Deontología, un 85,4 % de odontólogos tienen un nivel de conocimiento regular seguido de un 10,3 % con un nivel bueno y un 4,3% malo. Con respecto al nivel de conocimiento del ejercicio profesional el 54,7% tiene un nivel de conocimiento bueno, el 39,8% regular y el 5,5% malo. Sobre la expedición de certificados e historia clínica el 41,7% tiene un nivel de conocimiento malo, el 46,9% regular y el 11,4% bueno. De las relaciones profesionales el 55.1% tiene un nivel de conocimiento bueno, el 42,1% regular y el 2,8, malo. El nivel de conocimiento sobre el secreto profesional fue regular en un 52,2 %, malo en un 25,2% y bueno en un 22,4%. La conclusión alcanzada es que el nivel de conocimiento del Código de Ética y Deontología en odontólogos de la ciudad de Cusco fue regular predominando en el género masculino de 1 a 5 años de experiencia.
Um estudo sobre o status moral dos animais desde uma perspectiva deontológicaThe main concern of this work is to offer an analysis of the possibility of an ethical
approach to the interaction between human beings and animals. As far as possible we
seek an approach which rely neither on utilitarian considerations nor on indirect reasons
to explain the attribution of dignity or moral rights to animals. We take for granted that
some of them (if not all) do possess it. And then we try to show that a deontological
ethical theory (one which centers in the human as the agent but is not restricted to
humans as the objects of the moral action) can afford us a good theoretical basis for the
grounding of the attribution of rights or dignity to animals. Analyzing the main features
of Kantian ethics, as well as some of its alternatives, it will be possible to show that an
ethical theory which does not presuppose reciprocity nor depends solely upon particular
human concerns is not only possible but also reveals itself as the most sensible and
adequate to the nature of our values and of the case at hand.
La ética cartesiana entre teleología y deontologíaResumen: Los conceptos de felicidad, virtud, sumo bien y deber moral, que con tanta frecuencia
aparecen en el epistolario de Descartes, sugieren la posibilidad de examinar
la ética cartesiana a la luz del actual debate entre ética teleológica y deontológica.
En el presente artículo trataremos de dilucidar cuál es la aportación de Descartes
a esa polémica, subrayando algunos aspectos de su pensamiento que pueden ser ulteriormente
desarrollados con fruto. Con el fin de analizar la propuesta ética cartesiana
en su dimensión histórica, confrontaremos sus presupuestos y soluciones con
las respuestas dadas por algunos filósofos, especialmente Aristóteles, Kant y Apel.
A moral kantiana entre deontologia e teleologiaThis dissertation examines the Kantian moral in a teleological perspective. It consists of a reconstruction of philosophy practice that departs from the investigation of the categorical imperative, the concepts of duty, will, good will, as well as an approach on the ways of investigation of nature, which will enable the foundation to engage in the teleological argument, investigating the organized human beings, the harmonious system, its relationship with the ultimate and most important purpose, always flexing the analysis of these concepts the idea of purpose. Subsequently we will establish an argument about the end terminal and the implication of this concept to think about the real idea of the system in Kant and his relationship or support for moral theory. In essence this paper approaches the moral point of view of ethics, outlining the insufficiency of this field for the foundation of architectural moral, which will enable the final touch or the indispensability or the teleological argument as fundamental to the Kantian moral Theory
Feeling Wronged: The Value and Deontic Power of Moral DistressThis paper argues that moral distress is a distinctive category of reactive attitudes that are taken to be part and parcel of the social dynamics for recognition. While moral distress does not demonstrate evidence of wrongdoing, it does emotionally articulate a demand for normative attention that is addressed to others as moral providers. The argument for this characterization of the deontic power of moral distress builds upon two examples in which the cognitive value of the victim’s emotional experience is controversial: the case of micro-aggression, and the case of misplaced distress. In contrast to appraisal and perceptual models of distress, it is argued that its epistemic and normative value is dialogical rather than evidential, in that it presses claims that engage the audience in a normative discussion about the normative standing of the claimant, the proper grounds of the attitude, and the normative standards used to assess them.
Humanidad con fin, justificación de principios kantianos de justicia y diferencia deontológica: Una teoría kantiana de la acción para los fundamentos del argumento contractualista-constructivista políticoEl objetivo de este artículo es exponer un paso argumental para una justificación kantiana de la aplicación jurídico-política del principio de la humanidad que sea plenamente compatible con la tesis de la diferencia deontológica entre ética y derecho. Dicho paso se ubica en el nivel metaético de justificación de los principios de justicia en el marco del contrato originario. Using the Cataloguing Code of Ethics Principles for a Retrospective Project AnalysisThis study uses the recently released Cataloguing Code of Ethics to evaluate a project which explored how to ethically, efficiently, and accurately add demographic terms for African American authors to catalog records. By reviewing the project through the lens of these principles the authors were able to examine how their practice was ethical in some ways but could have been improved in others. This helped them identify areas of potential improvement in their current and future research and practice and explore ethical difficulties in cataloging resources with records that are used globally, especially in a linked data environment.
Got Ethics? Exploring the Value of Interprofessional Collaboration Through a Comparison of Discipline-Specific Codes of EthicsAbstract Introduction Quality health care requires that health professionals are well informed about the contributions of their own and other health professionals. Ethics is a shared, relevant concern among health and human service disciplines and is an ideal vehicle for students from different fields to learn about one another's disciplines and to participate in interprofessional discussions and problem solving. This exercise is designed for undergraduate and graduate students in health and human services. The session may also be adapted for use as an in-service activity for practicing professionals. Methods The session uses experiential and didactic methods. It consists of activities for small- and large-group interaction and facilitated discussions, with corresponding worksheets to guide and document student participation. The session can be used at any time in a course sequence and may be especially useful as an introductory session. Results In fall 2011, 96 students participated in the exercise, and over 97% rated it as helpful or very helpful. In spring 2012, 96 students participated, and 98.5% rated the experience as helpful or very helpful. Faculty reported that the exercise was very valuable to their students and set a context for interprofessional collaborative practice. Discussion The authors believe it is important to create a core interprofessional team of committed leaders/faculty who agree to be present together at all sessions as this enhances the learning for students. The faculty members interact with the content in ways that model interprofessional collaborative practice. The core competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice apply to faculty members as they teach an interprofessional case-based course collaboratively.
Collective drafting of the medical student’s code of ethics<p></p><p>Abstract This article describes the drafting of the Medical Student’s Code of Ethics comparing the process with what is described in literature. Data was collected through qualitative field research, by means of interviews with 24 students, and quantitative field research, using a questionnaire regarding ethical conflicts with a sample of 281 medical students. Based on the students’ views and bibliographic research, key issues regarding the preparation of the undergraduates’ code of ethics were identified. As a result, the code dealt with rights and duties of lecturers, patients, the institution and society as a whole, considering even contemporary problems such as the use of social networks and college hazing. The study concludes that the collective drafting of the code is the beginning of a process that intends to encourage reflection on health care and social perspective in order to take decisions consistent with ethical and moral principles, respecting human dignity.</p><p></p>
Can mandatory vaccination be ethically justified? A deontological perspective.Covid-19 is one of the greatest health challenges the world has faced in recent times, and mass vaccination appears to offer the least harmful ‘way out’. At individual level vaccination reduces vulnerability to disease, but at population level vaccination suppresses disease circulation, so that those whom vaccination cannot protect are protected by the rest. The level of vaccination needed to prevent disease circulation varies with disease transmissibility and vaccine efficacy. For Covid-19, with current vaccines, it has been estimated as approaching one hundred per cent. In these circumstances, do we each have a moral duty to agree be vaccinated? If so, is it ethically permissible to coerce this decision through mandation?
THE PROFESSIONAL ETHICS OF BRAZILIAN AIR FORCE OFFICERSThe Brazilian Air Force (FAB), through the Aeronautics Directorate of Education, executes twelve categories of courses to educate and train career officers and temporary officers. However, a look at the professional training of junior officers reveals shortcomings, especially concerning the teaching of military ethics. The document defining the professional profile of FAB officers, Professional Profile of Aeronautical Officers (PPOA), does not make clear distinctions about the ethical aspects associated with the combatant role of each specialty. Therefore, the PPOA does not define the attitudes, values, and skills necessary for the performance of the guard and security missions executed by all junior officers or warfare missions performed by career officers. Moreover, there is no conceptual and intellectual agreement in FAB about the competencies that characterize a military professional, nor any definitions about the roles that this professional should play in society. This thesis demonstrates that the curricula of the FAB courses for officers, in the military field, must be modified to meet the demands of the mission to be performed, which is evolving from a traditional profile to a hybrid war profile. Also, the thesis identifies the necessary balance between technical and military knowledge, demonstrating that ethical and moral education is the nucleus that connects all classes and specialties within the FAB.
Corporate Code of Conduct: A Kantian DiscussionThe moral issues that occur for profit corporations are a unique function of many internal and external factors, including corporate policies and purpose, business regulations, and business governance's economic and political system. Several possible theoretical frameworks prescribe behavioral norms and standards of conduct to companies, such as utilitarianism, deontological ethics, or virtue ethics. In this paper, we argue although there are signs cant similarities between Kantian Ethics and ideal corporate cultures, Kantian ethics cannot fully be integrated into contemporary corporate practices. Kant's theory of morality fundamentally fails to consistently accommodate the infamous given purpose of corporations, namely the profit-maximizer. We also provide empirical insights from a case study in developing a semi-Kantian corporate code of conduct in a large technology-based company.
O ENSINO DA DEONTOLOGIA NOS CURSOS DE GRADUAÇÃO MÉDICA DO BRASILResumo: Com a finalidade de obter subsídios relativos ao ensino da Deontologia, foi enviado questionário às 76 escolas de Medicina no País, a partir de dados contidos no Cadastro das Escolas Médicas, resultante do Programa de Desenvolvimento de Recursos Humanos no Brasil (Acordo MEC/MS/MPAS/OPS). A análise dos dados obtidos permitiu concluir que o ensino da Deontologia deva ser ministrado durante todo o Curso Médico, através de debates entre alunos e professores, com prioridade para os docentes com vivência clínica, boa formação psicológica e cultura humanística. Os autores indicam o método de resolução de problemas como procedimento de escolha para a formação ética do aluno.
Awareness rate of nurses & midwives working in the hospitals of Hamadan on principals of professional ethics in 2013Introduction: Ethics is one of the most fundamental professional training issues in nursing and midwifery. The aim of this study was to determine the awareness rate of professional ethics of nurses and midwives. Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, of 289 samples from Hamadan teaching hospitals in 2013were selected using a stratified random sampling. Data gathering, which was a two-part questionnaire, was developed by researchers. The first section contained demographic information and the second section contained with three sections to assess knowledge of ethic. Data Processing and statistical analysis were performed by SPSS 16. In order to analyze the data, descriptive and inferential statistics containing the chi-square and correlation tests was used. Further, the significance level of the test was considered 0.05. Results: The results showed that 33.2% of the research units aged between 26 and 30 years old. 87.9% of them were females and 36.7% had work experience from 1to 5 years. Most of the samples in moral – professional area were good (26.6%) and medium (68.9%). Also, they were good (31.1%) and medium (63.0%) in communication area. In law area, they were good (1.7%) and medium (49.5%). From the studied variables, there was meaningful relationship between area of moral with employment status and location of service person (P=0.001), the legal field with work experience (P=0.003) and the communication field with location of service person (P=0.003). Conclusion: The most rate of awareness of the units in moral and communication and law fields were, respectively, good and week. Therefore, continuing education classes are recommended to be held.
