ALTERNATIVE APPLICATIONS IN SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHING

Abstract

Computer-assisted instruction in a second language should clearly fall in line with the best practice in language teaching if it is to play a really significant role. Illustrating his points in detail with short sequences of different styles of interaction between a student and a computer, George Krupnik demonstrates a number of crucial differences in potential between the programs now in existence. Some programs conduct language "learning", by monitoring the language a student has produced and applying to it the rules that have been expounded. Others, however, can support language "acquisition", that spontaneous and largely unconcious process by which thinking in another language is achieved - a development that aligns programming with the main principles of language learning now recognized to apply.

L'enseignement d'une langue seconde assisté par ordinateur doit manifestement suivre les meilleures méthodes d'enseignement des langues s'il veut parvenir à jouer un rôle vraiment important. En illustrant son argumentation de courtes séquences portant sur différents modes d'interactions entre l'élève et l'ordinateur, M. Krupnik démontre un certain nombre de différences de potentiel cruciales entre les programmes qui existent aujourd'hui. Certains programmes dirigent "l'apprentissage" d'une langue en contrôlant le langage qu'un étudiant produit et en lui appliquant les règles qui ont eté exposées. D'autres, par contre, peuvent épauler "l'acquisition" d'une langue, processus spontané et en grande partie inconscient en vertu duquel on parvient à penser dans une autre langue, ce qui est un développement qui fait cadrer la programmation avec les principaux principes de l'apprentissage d'une langue qui s'appliquent de l'avis général.
