Abstract

"Niklas Luhmann ist bekannt für seine bewusste Abwendung von handelnden Akteuren hin zu deren interaktiver Verbundenheit durch sogenannte autopoietische Kommunikationssysteme (Luhmann 1994, 1990). Neben dem Gewinn einer neuen Beobachtungsperspektive stellt sich in der Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Ansatz jedoch immer auch die Frage nach dessen method(olog)ischer Umsetzbarkeit im Rahmen sozial- und managementwissenschaftlicher Forschung. Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht, diese Frage anhand einer konkreten qualitativen Methode zu beantworten. Ziel ist es, die Sinngehalte sozialer Systeme und den damit verbundenen Prozess der Verfertigung bzw. Aufrechterhaltung entsprechender Inhalte methodisch, d.h. systematisch und für Dritte nachvollziehbar, festzuhalten. Als zentrale Untersuchungseinheit wird die Gruppe in den Fokus des Interesses genommen. Mit der Erhebungsmethode der Gruppendiskussion (Loos & Schäfer 2005; Bohnsack 1999) und der Auswertungsmethode der 'dokumentarischen Methode' (Bohnsack 2003) wird ein möglicher Zugang zu den von Niklas Luhmann beschriebenen selbst-referenziellen Kommunikationsstrukturen skizziert. Entlang empirischer Vignetten werden die zuvor erläuterten Analyseschritte an konkretem Fallmaterial aus einem Forschungsprojekt zur 'sozialen Verantwortung von Unternehmen in der Schweiz' exemplarisch dargestellt." "Niklas Luhmann is well known for his deliberate departure from the classical focus on studying individual actions and directing attention on the actors' relatedness through so called (autopoietic) communication systems. In contrast to the gain of a new perspective of observation his focus on autopoietic systems is simultaneously its biggest methodological obstacle for the use in social and management sciences. The present contribution considers the above shift on a theoretical level and with a specific qualitative method. It argues for a deeper understanding of systemic sense making and its enactment in a systematic and comprehensible way. Central to this approach is its focus on groups. Using group discussions as the method of data collection, and the 'documentary method' by Ralf Bohnsack (2003) as a method of data analysis, the article describes a methodologically grounded way to record the self-referential systems proposed by Luhmann's system theory. The theoretical considerations of the paper are illustrated by empirical vignettes derived from a research project conducted in Switzerland concerning the social responsibility of business."
