Adolfas Tautavičius (1925–2006) was an encyclopaedic scholar interested in many areas of archaeology. He was equally knowledgeable in the archaeology of the Stone, Bronze, Early Metal, Iron and Middle Ages. He was familiar with all of the archaeological monuments both of the Lithuanian seacoast and of the East, North and South. Adolfas Tautavičius is the author or co-author of many monographs. He has more than 800 articles to his name. This article surveys Adolfas Tautavičius’ scientific activities. This is done by identifying the context of scientific thought in which Tautavičius’ work emerged. The polemic areas of research are not silenced, and the novelty and importance of Tautavičius’ work to the development of Lithuanian archaeology are shown.Date
