Abstract
Effective communication is vital for the survival and existence of any family, community or organisation. Understanding the role of communication within any organisation is crucial and its appropriate use is of paramount importance. Should communications be removed from an organisation, the organisation will cease to exist because communication is truly the lifeblood of any organisation (Rogers & Agarwala-Rogers, 1967, p. 7). This paper aims to emphasize the need to incorporate communication modules in higher education curricula, and also to identify the various forms of communication used by organisations. The paper is based on the premise that communication is the lifeblood of every organisation; without proper and effective communication, the organisation will cease to exist. The objectives are to describe the various forms of communication used by organisations to propagate their services, in order for higher institutions of learning to incorporate them into their curricula. The practical implications of this study show that proper and effective internal and external communication can improve the efficiency of every organisation. Relevant communication modules based on the qualification students are studying towards is a necessity. This will equip students with an in-depth understanding of communication before they enter industry. An educational approach is needed where higher education institutions become aware of the need to equip students with effective communication skills. Keywords: communication, organisation, higher education institutions, learning, graduates
