Abstract

Through participatory approaches to learning, critical and transformative agricultural education could develop the capacities of students and farmers to think independently and critically and develop a systems-based approach to farming that takes into account all facets of agriculture and food production. Such education has the potential to challenge and create alternatives to existing industrial agriculture and food systems; alternatives that support local communities, build and maintain the vitality of the land, and value those who work it. With the aim of understanding how the principles and practices of critical and transformative adult education can inform agricultural education, this study comprises case study and action research with the Linnaea Farm Ecological Gardening Programme, British Columbia.
