Abstract
A defining feature of a country’s health care system is the relative importance of public and private health insurance and the way the two sources of coverage interact. The United States stands out relative to other industrialized countries because of the central role played by private insurance in financing health care. Roughly three-quarters of the US population holds private insurance and that coverage accounts for over one-third of total health expenditures.
