Introduction: Although several online continuing medical education (CME) offers exist, the utilization of these by physicians is still low. In this study, we aimed to investigate the attitude towards and use of the Internet and online CME in German general practitioners (GPs) and to identify potential starting points to increase the use of online CME. Methods: In June 2006, a standardized 6-page questionnaire with 27 questions on the topic “Internet and online continuing education” was sent to all general practitioners in 6 districts (n=1304) of South Baden and South Württemberg in Germany. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and exploratory regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of online CME usage. Furthermore, selected barriers were investigated in detail. Results: A total of 351 questionnaires were sent back, of which 349 could be included in the analysis (27% response rate). The sample is representative of the population contacted with respect to gender and qualifications. Univariate analyses showed that users of online CME were two years younger than non-users on average. Users spent two hours more on the Internet per week than non-users, and had been using the Internet for one year longer. Finally, users had better Internet skills, more often had previous experiences with online CME, and assessed the effectiveness of online CME to be higher and perceived fewer problems than non-users. Discussion: Measures to implement and increase the use of online CME can be aimed at different levels. The most important starting points are likely to be offering GPs the possibility to gain experience with online CME and improving their attitudes towards online CME. But for some physician populations, e.g. elderly or physicians with less Internet experience, e-learning might be an inferior option in comparison to traditional CME.Date

É fundamental a participação facilitadora do coordenador para integração e mobilização dos participantes.<br>OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed at developing and delivering a course in the modality "Internet-conducted distance education". MATERIALS AND METHODS: The theme "Sentinel lymph node, prevention, early diagnosis and biopsy - a new technique for approaching breast cancer" was utilized as an application model, and the didactic material for distance-learning was targeted to a selected audience of physicians involved in the treatment of breast cancer. The course was structured in a virtual learning environment, allowing interaction among participating students. RESULTS: The coursework took place over a 12-week period. Nine gynecologists with at least eight years of professional experience participated in some way in the course, but only two of them accomplished exercises and interacted. In the distance-education modality, the course reached eight cities in four Brazilian states. A full engagement did not occur, although most of participants have remained until the end of the course. Possibly, there was a lack of motivation. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that it is necessary to break the barriers to the culture related to this form of learning. A pro-active participation of the coordinator is essential for integrating and mobilizing the participants.

Research Performances of Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) MembersMaryam Khoubnasabjafari; Eliza Sadeghifar; Majid Khalili; Khalil Ansarin; Abolghasem Jouyban (Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, 2012-05-01)Introduction: Scientometric analysis of academic institutions provides useful information for policy makers, international and national organizations to invest in the research fields of the institutions to gain more outputs with less cost. The objectives of this work were to report a scientometric analysis of Islamic states considering a number of indicators. Methods: The number of articles and patents published by members of organization of Islamic conference were extracted from ScopusTM along with the top journals, authors, document type, universities, language of the publications and subjects. Results: The analyses of data revealed that Turkey is the leading country followed by Iran, Egypt, Malaysia and Nigeria when total numbers of indexed articles in ScopusTM are considered. When the articles of 2006-2010 are considered the ranks are Turkey, Iran, Malaysia, Egypt and Pakistan. Conclusion: the increased pattern was observed for scientific performances of OIC members however, more investments are required to fill the gap between OIC members and the leading countries.

The threat from creationism to the rational teaching of biologyATHEL CORNISH-BOWDEN; MARÍA LUZ CÁRDENAS (Sociedad de Biología de Chile, 2007-01-01)Most biologists outside the USA and a few other countries, like Australia and Canada, are under the impression that the threat to the teaching of biology represented by creationism does not concern them directly. This is unfortunately no longer true: the recent growth of creationism, especially in its pseudo-scientific manifestation known as "intelligent design", has been obvious in several countries of Western Europe, especially the UK, Germany and Poland, and it is beginning to be noticeable in Brazil, and maybe elsewhere in Latin America. The problem is complicated by the fact that there are not just two possibilities, evolution and creationism, because creationism comes in various incompatible varieties. Turkey is now a major source of creationist propaganda outside the USA, and is especially significant in relation to its influence on Muslim populations in Europe. The time for biologists to address the creationist threat is now
