Abstract
Our conception of education has been that it is the responsibility of a man to become more; a human being, and that a man’s education is what enables him to adapt to the challenges that life and the world present, and that is which enables him to enter into the larger, shared cultural tradition. However such sharing implies that we must not rely only on tradition, but remain open to new ideas. It is essential for formal, scholarly education to preserve a field of intersection in which the art of living with the world is learned in such a way that fully prepares future generations. It is this field of intersection that this essay seeks to discuss, in sharing Foucault’s understanding about care of the self and the role played by others in the acquisition of ethical attitudes pertaining to one’s conduct in life. Through reconstructing the ideas of this philosopher, we will elaborate on the hypothesis that before morally shaping the students, teaching them values, or aiding in their acquisition of certain skills through scholarly education, it is important to understand the notion of care of the self and how interaction with others is vital to comprehensively understand the relationship between ethics and education in school. In particular, we will examine how Foucault’s ideas and his analysis of the role of the teacher in shaping the life conduct of the student may help the educator to rethink pedagogical action in an ethical sense, and find within it a certain openness to the formation of the attitudes of both his students and himself.
