Abstract
It is widely recognized that today the higher education is going through several struc-tural as well as seasonal problems and weaknesses. The Catalan university system is not an exception since there are some relevant issues creating pressures between different actors and systems inside the sector such as an increase of the tuition prices, or a low attendance rate of students. Thus, the main goal of the thesis is to analyse and evaluate how the entrance of different technologies may improve the actual situation of the Cata-lan higher education and provide some worthwhile ideas for decision-makers. The theoretical basis that supports the whole study is the multi-level perspective of technological transitions. The first part of the thesis aims to collect all the information needed to apply the framework, and structure it for the later analysis. The second part constitutes the analysis itself which has been specifically designed for this case since the multi-level perspective does not specify how it has to be done. In the first part of the analysis, the theoretical potential and influence of the technologies over the higher edu-cation system are corroborated matching their features with the needs present in the sector. Then, due to the existence of an important degree of uncertainty, three possible future states of the Catalan higher education are created using scenarios building. The thesis mainly concludes that all the five technologies considered may have influ-ence in the higher education and change the actual teaching and learning paradigm. Hence, all three scenarios are positive in terms of needs fulfilled although they have some downsides like the investment costs required. Overall, it is suggested to decision-makers to give financial and political support to develop MOOCs, more effective virtual learning environments, and make use of multi-touch screens in order to move towards internationalisation, more interaction, and less overhead costs in the long-term.Type

The development of professional competences using the interdisciplinary project approach with university studentsGonzález Carrasco, Mònica; Francés Ortega, Jesús; Castro Vila, Rodolfo de; Castañer Vivas, Margarida; San Molina, Joan; Martí Bonmatí, Joan (OmniaScience, 2016-06)This work describes an experience conducted by a group of professors from different departments at the University of Girona (Catalonia, Spain) which arose from the need for interdisciplinary work in university classrooms in order to promote competences relevant to the professional sector. As part of this experience, students from different degree programs were challenged to work collaboratively and in an interdisciplinary manner on a project related to the management of a school cafeteria designed for a real educational center. The work promoted the development of competences that are otherwise difficult to attain through activities that lack an interdisciplinary approach, which are key in today's professional world, such as multi-professional teamwork. Based on this experience, the feasibility of students from different areas of study carrying out a final degree project (FDP) that meets real, contextualized needs and requires the contribution of knowledge from different disciplines is considered

Improving the learning experience of business subjects in engineering studies using automatic spreadsheet correctorsRafart Serra, Maria Assumpció; Bikfalvi, Andrea; Soler Masó, Josep; Prados Carrasco, Ferran; Poch Garcia, Jordi (OmniaScience, 2017-06)The combination of two macro trends, ICT proliferation and novel approaches in education, has resulted in a series of opportunities with no precedent in terms of content, channels and methods in education. The present contribution aims to describe the architecture, functionality and impact of an automatic spreadsheet corrector responding to a problem-solving approach in an e-learning environment. A total of 179 students coursing technical studies attended a basic course on business administration in the framework of which the experiment was conducted. Subjective perception of students demonstrates a very good opinion about the learning experience using the proposed ICT tool. Objective results show that it is a valuable learning tool, while students who obtain a high final qualification are the ones that have been positively evaluated in the sessions using the automatic spreadsheet corrector. Beyond these highlighted benefits for students, teachers gain time, effort and workload reduction. The validity of the proposal is tested in the Polytechnic School of the University of Girona in Catalonia (Spain)
