This introduction is intended to provide a bird's-eye view of the key ideas, concepts and theories that are dealt with in the various chapters. It should help you, the pre-service or beginning teacher, to understand how to use this book effectively and efficiently. Each chapter opens with a set of Learner Outcomes that you should aim to achieve as a result of reading the chapter and completing the suggested activities in the chapter; and Key Terms that are used in the chapter in a special way (these key terms are also included in a glossary at the back of the book). Embedded within each chapter are invitations to you to reflect on the ideas presented in the chapter and, working as a collaborative team in tutorial groups of no more than five students, or with colleagues, to challenge and discuss what the chapter proposes. These discussions and activities are intended to provide opportunities for you to apply the ideas suggested in the chapter to your practical contexts. These activities should help you to develop a deeper understanding of how what the chapter proposes can improve teaching, learning, assessment and curriculum. At the end of each chapter, you will find Online Resources and a reference list of readings that should help you engage further with the ideas dealt with in the chapter.Date
