Abstract
Although online collaborative learning presents new opportunities to promote regulated behaviors to support joint construction of meaning, in teaching practice it can present several difficulties. The purpose of this article is to explain, from a sociocultural perspective, some of the strategies employed by students when engaged in cooperative learning tasks. A virtual university course was studied empirically to evaluate and promote cooperative regulated behavior during argumentative tasks based on written argumentation in virtual and asynchronous communication environments.
El aprendizaje cooperativo en línea presenta nuevas oportunidades para promover comportamientos regulados que favorezcan la construcción conjunta de conocimientos. Sin embargo, en la práctica docente este aspecto es una preocupación y presenta diversas dificultades. El propósito de este artículo es explicar, desde la perspectiva sociocultural, algunos comportamientos más estratégicos de los estudiantes durante el desarrollo de tareas de aprendizaje cooperativo. Se describe un estudio empírico realizado en un curso en una universidad virtual sobre cuya base se presenta una propuesta metodológica para evaluar y promover comportamientos regulados durante tareas cooperativas con demandas argumentativas en entornos virtuales asincrónicos y escritos.

    This article deals with concepts and topics of present relevance: learning styles and strategies, metacognition, and their role in the foundation of the learning design of e-learning activities and virtual learning environments. (VLE). The importance of metacognition in e-learning stands out, basically taking into account the selection, sequencing and organization of contents which pay particular attention to students’ specific characteristics and learning situations. The qualities of promoting self-study and autonomy that these environments have seem to need, more than others, a sound knowledge of the student’s own learning resources. However, is it easy or feasible to include elements to increase these resources , which pertain unavoidably and in a non-tranferable way to the student’s self? How, or which are the cognitive or regulating tools of one’s own knowledge that are to be used? Under which criteria or conditions could elements to control the cognitive activity of the individuals be incorporated in e-learning activities? Could this role be fulfilled by didactic guides or by specifications in learning design? Under which criteria and conditions? – these are the questions we pose. As regards learning syles, we wonder if the information available is enough to define the features of an apropriate learning style for VLE, or rather, if it’s necesary to take them into account for the instructional design. So, do we observe and learn enough about the students’ learning styles so as to direct teaching towards better learning conditions in the VLE, or make them posible, at least? Which may be the essential elements in the VLE and in the instructional design to carry out this function?

    Knowledge construction and regulation of learning in asynchronous collaborative tasks

    This article presents the results of a research developed with students of bachelor's degree in education from Autonomous University of Baja California, Mexico. In six small groups of students, collaborative learning processes in asynchronous communication technology environments were analyzed. Through a multiple case study methodology, the discourse displayed by the students during their collaboration was analyzed with a double focus: the cognitive discourse oriented to the knowledge construction and the discourse aimed to regulate the task. The results highlights that the establishment of goals, the formulation of positive expectations about the task, the monitoring of progress and the socio-emotional support are regulatory mechanisms that contribute strongly to the development of rich and profound processes of shared knowledge construction. A positive effect of the regulatory discourse on the cognitive activity of students is concluded.
