Abstract
The uses of the greek word aidôs (shame, reverence) and its cognates by Homer, Hesiod, Pindar and by Plato in the Phaedrus are reviewed, in order to expand our view of shame/reverence in the Ancient world in opposition to the contemporary reduction of this passion to “prurient” subjects. Looking for the ethical – and political – dimensions of the concept, we try to aswer this question: can shame/reverence be regarded as a key-delimiting factor for the protection of our individual, social and even virtual identity?
