Improving Learning Outcomes through Information Literacy

Abstract

Join this session to explore the five components of information literacy: Know, Access, Evaluate, Ethics, and Use. Two examples implementing these principles in pre-calculus will be shared including Calculating Biorhythms and Modeling Daylight with Sinusoidal Curves. These project-based learning environments are explained as they relate to and promote information literacy. Data from these projects was collected and examined through statistical process and the results provide evidence of improved student learning outcomes. After a discussion of these projects, participants will have the opportunity to interact with each other to create their own information literacy project using the five components adapted to their discipline. This session will support the participants by providing materials and guidance about information literacy. Additionally, this session will help participants to develop an inquiry framework for which they can investigate their students' learning outcomes and determine if their projects are really making a difference.
