The purpose of this project was to develop a model curriculum for Korean immigrant new mothers, which has both psychoeducational and supportive functions in order to: (1) increase knowledge about postpartum depression; (2) learn about immigration stressors; (3) gain knowledge about adjustment factors and related difficulties; and (4) identify cultural differences. A postpartum curriculum for Korean immigrant mothers should incorporate cultural beliefs and practices surrounding the postpartum period in order to increase cultural sensitivity. This curriculum incorporates both a psychoeducational aspect in the form of lectures and presentations, and a support group for the purpose of providing a social support network. This curriculum is designed to address physiological issues, psychosocial issues, and infant care by increasing knowledge in medical and mental health diagnosis and interventions, available social service and mental health resources, existing mental health systems, and cultural variations in infant care and child rearing practices.
Date
