Abstract
The formation of collective identity aims, among other things, at describing communities in an unambiguous and meaningful way. Reconstructing and problematizing both of these aspects, the present paper elaborates two criteria by which a differentiated and viable theory of collective identity may be measured. It finally presents William E. Connolly’s »critical pluralism« as an approach that seems to fulfil these criteria while shedding light on the attribution of collective identity in its complexity and ambiguity.
