PURPOSE A substantial proportion of adult patients with asthma have inadequately controlled symptoms despite the availability of effective treatment. The Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) can be used to discriminate between asthma patients with well- and suboptimally controlled asthma symptoms. The objective of this study was to investigate whether a postal mailing of the ACQ can be used to identify asthma patients with suboptimal symptom control in family practice. METHODS In this observational study, we sent 434 asthma patients from 6 Dutch family practices an ACQ by mail to measure control of their asthma symptoms. Both respondents and nonrespondents were characterized by information gathered from their medical records. Patients with an ACQ sum score (total score) of greater than 3 were considered to have suboptimally controlled asthma symptoms. RESULTS The response rate was 77%. Respondents were more likely than non- respondents to be female and to use asthma medication. The mean ACQ sum score of the respondents was 5.2. Of this group, 53.4% (95% confidence interval, 48.0%-58.8%) had suboptimally controlled asthma symptoms. Of the 168 respondents who had not visited their family physician in the 2 years before the study, 42.9% (95% confidence interval, 35.4%-50.4%) had inadequate asthma symptom control. CONCLUSIONS Our results show that a postal mailing of the ACQ is an effective approach for tracing asthma patients who need medical attention. It also traces patients who would otherwise not have consulted their family physician. The ACQ seems to be a useful starting point for health care professionals in family practice to improve the level of asthma symptom control in their patient population.Date

Distance Education and Community Learning Networks linked by a Library of CultureSantiago, Joseph A (DigitalCommons@URI, 2011-02-14)Humans are relational beings with their modeled behavior as practical examples of cultural routines that they hear, see, read, and assemble on their own from communal pieces of information to answer the needs of their everyday lives (Bandura, & Jeffrey, 1973). Yet few researchers have looked at the differing synthesis of culture and generally assume that others share similar ideas/values that lead to particular events and worldviews (Lillard, p.5 1998). Informational and cultural contact zones can be created to support CLNs, universities, and individuals in a variety of roles to encourage their interactions so they might design, and challenge the fundamentals of these programs and seek to better cooperation amongst the public itself (Tremmel, 2000). By increasing communication and collaboration of educational systems throughout the community will begin to raise the standard of living for all people (Bohn, & Schmidt, 2008). This will begin to draw people out from the digital divide and increase the access of technology and information available to all people with the community. Utilizing CLNs to support and further education will allow an interconnected web of assessments, standards, and cooperative efforts that has the potential of increasing democracy by empowering people from their communities.

`n Gestruktureerde vraelys is as data-insamelingsmetode benut. SUMMARY An exploratory and descriptive study was undertaken to provide scientifically based guidelines regarding educational techniques used by practical trainers when providing social work supervision to undergraduate students. To apply supervision effectively, practical trainers must have knowledge of educational techniques and be able to apply these. The literature study focuses on the educational function of supervision and provides a classification and description of educational techniques that can be applied within the supervision process. The sample included twenty-two supervisors/practical trainers at family welfare organisations in the Metropolitan and Boland regions, Western Cape. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data. The findings and results show that continuing education through informal training strategies by practical trainers is essential to expand their knowledge of the educational function of supervision and to encourage the use of educational techniques. Further research should focus on educational techniques from the Gestalt approach or other approaches.
