  • Understanding the moral and ethical dimensions of the Bhagavad Gita

Mathias Yuvan Shunmugam; Maniraj Sukdaven (AOSIS, 2024-01-01)
In Hinduism, there is a distinction made between dharma and karma. Both are essential for the purpose of reaching moksha. Dharma (moral) is the cosmic law or moral principle that governs an individual’s conduct and Karma is the result of past, present and future actions. To achieve good karma (ethical), it is important to live according to dharma. Therefore, in terms of morality in Hinduism, there is an obligation to fulfil one’s destiny as prescribed by the cosmic principle. Karma, on the other hand, serves as the ethical principle in achieving this moral obligation. This distinction is observed in the dilemma, which is played out in the story of Krishna and Arjuna as expressed in the Bhagavad Gita. Contribution: As a result, the contribution to understanding the morality of the Bhagavad Gita rests on Sri Krishna’s strong argument that an individual must set aside their own desires and aspire solely to perform actions that are aligned with the cosmic principle. This means that an individual has the moral obligation to perform those actions irrespective of whether they agree or disagree with the prescribed action. This article engages with the moral obligation and karmic actions, which seem to be at odds with each other, yet the moral obligation takes precedent.
  • Feic! Arse! Drink! Girls! Father Ted in the development of post-colonial Irish identity

    Thomas Wakely (17955823) (2024-02-13)
This dissertation examines the formation of Irish national identity through the satirical reflection of the television show, Father Ted. In this analysis, an overview of identity through objects and performances is used to define the modes in which a nation can reflect on certain issues that are presented to them, with knowledge of a culture in which they exist, to correct undesirable aspects and retain others that are cherished. This research will be contrasted alongside three episodes in which the most prominent social critiques occur, and which coincide with real Irish events. The examples analysed showcase the power of satire to open discourse on a topic and allow a people to decide based on their acceptance of the satire as reflectory of themselves or those who exist within their identity. This dissertation is structured around three topics, sexual abuse within the Catholic Church and its institutions, Irish masculinity and morality dictation. Within these three topics, I contrast the satire utilised to open discourse on the topic, how this satire is received in terms of national identity and the real events which underlined the comedy.
  • Gongsheng Across Contexts

    Springer NaturePalgrave Macmillan, 2024-02-13
This open access book sheds light on the term gongsheng/kyōsei, which is used in Chinese and Japanese to not only translate “symbiosis” in biology but also broadly deployed in philosophical, social and political contexts. It is a cross-contextual attempt to study the foundation of gongsheng/kyōsei as a philosophy of co-becoming, with exploration of its significance for thinking about the planetary challenges of our times.

  • Guru as an Academic Leader in Vedic Tradition: A Review

Neupane, Bharat; Gnawali, Laxman (Department of Languages and Mass Communication Kathmandu University, 2023-12-31)
Vedic literature from the Indian Subcontinent does not use the phrase ‘academic leadership’ or any other terminology precisely equivalent to this; still, rishi-munis , gurus, and even some kings with passion for knowledge, who provided the environment for exploration and dissemination of knowledge and wisdom can be considered as academic leaders in true sense. In this line, this article reports the review results on the concept of educational leadership depicted in Vedic literature. For this purpose, we explored writings on Vedic wisdom tradition and philosophy, mainly in Google Scholar, using the keyphrases “academic leadership in Vedic literature,” “education system in India,” “Sanatan philosophy,” “Hindu education system,” “Gurukul education,” and “education system in Mithila.” The review results revealed that academic leaders were selected based on practical expertise and specialization in content knowledge, particularly skills, knowledge, character, moral values, perseverance, and gratitude. Academic leaders were father figures, a source of inspiration, role models, and much more. Besides, leaders were characterized by honesty, devotion, and trust, and they had a passion for education and dedication to the profession with a desire for the quest for eternal truth. At current times, when the selection of leadership in academia is based on non-academic influence, such as political inclination, nepotism, and favoritism, neglecting leadership qualities and performance, particularly in Nepal and many other countries, the article provides valuable insights into academic leadership.
  • Deities’ Rights?

Das Acevedo, Deepa (Emory Law Scholarly Commons, 2023-01-01)
A brief commotion arose during the hearings for one of twenty-first-century India’s most widely discussed legal disputes, when a dynamic young attorney suggested that deities, too, had constitutional rights. The suggestion was not absurd. Like a human being or a corporation, Hindu temple deities can participate in litigation, incur financial obligations, and own property. There was nothing to suggest, said the attorney, that the same deity who enjoyed many of the rights and obligations accorded to human persons could not also lay claim to some of their constitutional freedoms. The lone justice to consider this claim blandly and briefly observed that having specific legal rights did not perforce endow one with constitutional rights. Nevertheless, a handful of recent and high-profile disputes concerning Hindu temple deities and the growing influence of Hindu nationalist politics together suggest that the issue of deities’ rights is far from a settled matter. This article argues that declining to recognize deities’ constitutional rights accurately reflects dueling commitments in the Indian Constitution.
  • Teozofia i Indie : Księgi proroków Antoniego Langego

    Deja, Katarzyna (Wydawnictwo Prymat, 2023)
Antoni Lange is well-known for his interest in Indian philosophy and theology. Still, in his early works, this interest is primarily mediated by late nineteenth-century theosophy and its esoteric syncretism. Books of Prophets ["Księgi proroków"], a series of six poems concerning great world religions: Judaism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism, are an excellent example of Lange's syncretic philosophical system. The series is a conglomerate of interest in said religions and esoteric writings by leading theosophists of that time: Helena Blavatsky, Edouard Schuré, and Alfred Percy Sinnett. The aim article presents how Indian thought was adapted and distorted through the lenses of theosophy to fulfill Lange's aim of offering a journey of an adept of esoteric path to enlightenment.

  • Το βάπτισμα των χριστιανών κατά το Unitatis Redintegratio της β΄ βατικανής συνόδου: δογματική διερεύνηση από Ορθόδοξη άποψη

Heers, Peter; Χιρς, Πέτρος (Aristotle University Of Thessaloniki (AUTH)Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης (ΑΠΘ), 2013)
The place of Baptism in the new ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council as it is formulated in the Conciliar texts, Decree on Ecumenism (Unitatis Redintegratio) and also the Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium), is examined in two parts: (1) Key Aspects of the Historical Development of the Roman Catholic Teaching on Baptism and the Church and (2) Baptism and the Church in Unitatis Redintegratio. The potential of baptism to be the key which will open the door to unity was not fully acknowledged until the Second Vatican Council. With this council’s recognition of both the validity and efficacy of non-Roman Catholic baptism, and an already existing ecclesiastical unity, albeit imperfect, all eyes were set on baptism. In spite of the extensive ecumenical literature on the subject, scholars have neglected to examine important inconsistencies, historical and ecclesiological, which exist in the conciliar document of the Council on the subject, Unitatis Redintegratio, as well the historical and theological road which led to this document. In other words, premature theological conclusions have been reached and even celebrated without due consideration of the Patristic and Orthodox outlook. This paper fills this gap by presenting a critical examination of the place and understanding of baptism in the unity of the Church as expounded in the Decree on Ecumenism, Unitatis Redintegratio. This critique likewise contributes to a fuller understanding of the Orthodox view of the place of baptism in the unity of the Church.

  • The Will to Power as Creative Love : Nietzschean Legacies of the Good News of Jesus and Lutheranism

Centre de recherche en histoire des idées (CRHI) ; Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (1965 - 2019) (UNS)-Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)-Université Côte d'Azur (UCA); Université Côte d'Azur; Pierre-Yves Quiviger; Céline Borello; Mouanda, Orlène Eulalie (HAL CCSD, 2023-09-08)
Our thesis seeks to bring to light the way in which the key formulas of Nietzscheanism, namely the will to power, the superhuman, the eternal return, the Great South and amor fati — in their practical and axiological dimension — dialogue in the form of an underground tablecloth with one of the essential virtues of Christianity, in particular agape love and the pietist ideal, with a view to establishing a humanism of affects. Indeed, by his unusual atheism, Nietzsche appears very concerned with creating philosophical values that create joy, which, while taking the opposite view of the Platonic-Christian values promulgated by institutional and modern Christianity - are in perfect harmony with the Good News of Jesus and the "religion of the heart" of Zinzendorf, which became a "ground of soul" or "Gemüth" which opens in a piety of reforming unbelief. Clearly, it is a question of showing that the hypothesis of the will to power as creative love or "virtue that prodigal" obeys the requirement of sharing as wanted by the commandment of love of Jesus formulated in Johannine thought.
  • Golden Rule Ethics and Complementary Learning Process with the Other: from Confucius’ and Christian Approaches to Hatatas’ Approach

    Merawi, Fasil (SJSU ScholarWorks, 2024-01-23)
Through the development of a comparative analysis that explores the conceptions of the Golden Rule that are expressed in the teachings of Confucius, Christianity and the Hatatas, the article shows that the combined insights that emerge from these three teachings have a contemporary significance in the attempt to develop a complementary learning process with the Other. Throughout its variations, the Golden Rule is grounded on the need to treat others as how we want to be treated. Such a moral vision occupies a central importance in Confucius’s ren, Christianity’s Gospel of Matthew and the commandments, and the Hatatas’ principle of harmony. The comparative exercise in contending conceptions of the Golden Rule that are found in Confucius’, the Christian and the Hatatas’ approaches leads into the emergence of a learning process that goes beyond the mere tolerance of the Other. In a globalized world, where there is a search for a moral guideline that can serve as a common source of motivation, the Golden Rule can serve as a foundation of a process of learning that is mutually supportive, supplementary and is hence complementary.
  • Al-Qur'an and the Da'wah Approach Model in the Disruption Era

Aftonur Rosyad; Eko Zulfikar (Prodi Ilmu Al-Quran dan Tafsir, 1970-01-01)
Da'wah is part of the commands of the Qur'an. Many of the several verses of the Qur'an describe the concept of da'wah. With the development of the era, the method or approach of da'wah must be able to reach the reality on the ground. The concept of da'wah brought by the Walisongo is certainly different in terms of approach, culture, society and strategy. In the QS. al-Nahl verse 125, it is explained about several methods of da'wah, namely wisdom, mauidzah hasanah and mujadalah. By using qualitative methods and content analysis, this article concludes that the da'wah approach in navigating the era of disruption can use the Walisongo's footsteps, namely the theological approach, scientific approach, institutional approach, social approach, cultural approach, structural approach, and economic approach. From these several approaches, da'i can pick and choose from the several approaches above to serve as a way of preaching in the era of disruption.
