Leading Diversity in the Masses: An overview of the NCBI model for Academic and Student Affairs Professionals
Abstract
Included among the philosophies of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) is the idea that “training teams of peer leaders is the most effective way to empower people to take leadership in reducing racism and other forms of discrimination”(National Coalition Building Institute, 2015). The purpose of this presentation is to provide insight and programmatic data on the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) model for prejudice reduction. Specific to higher education professionals, this presentation includes a brief overview of NCBI research and objectives, and a demonstration of the prejudice reduction workshop model as implemented in a higher education setting. Participants will be allowed to participate in a simulated exercise conducted as a part of the workshop. A discussion of the contextualization and efficacy of prejudice reduction workshops as an integral part of professional development for faculty, staff and student leaders concludes the research presentation.Date
