Abstract
Our aim is to reflect objectively on the question of identity and of the difference between China
and Christianity, taking the work of Jacques Gernet “Chine et Christianisme” for our starting point. On analysing the comparison and the knowledge to which both European and Chinese culture were subjected in the XVI-XVIII centuries, we shall attempt to analyse the origin of the underlying misunderstanding which has resulted, even in our own day, in a failure
to recognise the true basis of Chinese culture. In order to achieve this, I propose to analyse the
historical experience of missionary work in China, spearheaded by the Company of Jesus, with
the aim of showing how the search for similarities in fact causes us, at times, to create misunderstandings and to construct false identities. We can state with some assurance that, in spite
of the fact that we live in an increasingly globalised world, these circumstances remain identifiable and perceptible, and that the misunderstandings and cultural clashes between the
West and the East do not belong to the past but remain part of the present world order.
