Abstract
The article addresses the issue whether Russia belongs to Asia historically and geopolitically. The author is skeptical about the Eurasian hypothesis about the common heritage of Genghis Khan, allegedly making Russia an Asian nation. The Mongol Empire, to which Russian principalities belonged for merely 20 years, is viewed by the author as “a fictitious kingdom.” Geopolitically Russia is not defined by Eurasianism, but is shaped by numerous rivers and seas, which the author suggests calling “Russian island”, the term coined by Vadim Tsymbursky. Russia’s exploration of the Siberia region was not the “penetration into Asia,” but rather the exploration of the island, which illustrated by the expansion of the territories to the Far East. Citing N. Danilevsky and F. Dostoevsky, the author stresses that according to Russian thinkers, Asia belonged to the Russian state geopolitically, with Russia regarding it as the fortress to be protected from the Anglo-Saxon invasion. Meanwhile, the “Easterners’” vision of a special spiritual affinity of Russia and Asia encountered an insurmountable obstacle as Russian Christianity is inalienable as the cornerstone of the Russian Idea.
