Abstract
Family is the smallest community unit with an important role in preventing, early detecting and treating the patients with mental disorder, including the prevention of relapse. Family empowerment through education to improve knowledge is an effort to obtain family members’ independence in treating the patients with mental disorder. Mental Hospital of Province of Sumatera Utara is facing the problem of the high number of patients who relapsed and were brought again to the mental hospital for treatment. Allegedly, this condition occured because the family empowerment done through education has not been optimally implemented. The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of family empowerment through education on the ability to treat the patients with mental disorder in the City of Medan at Mental Hospital of Province of Sumatera Utara. This quantitative study with cross-sectional design was conducted to the samples of 39 heads of the families of the patients with mental disorder at Mental Hospital of Province of Sumatera Utara. The data for this study were obtained through questionnaire distribution and statistically analyzed through Chi-square test and Multiple Logistic Regression test at α = 5%. The result of this study showed that empowerment through education given to the families of the patients with mental disorder at Mental Hospital of Provinve of Sumatera Utara under the didactic components, emotion, family process and social component had positive and significant influence on the ability to treat the patients with mental disorder. The most dominant variable influencing the ability to treat the patients with mental disorder was social component (p = 0.025 and OR = 47.229). The management of Mental Hospital of Province of Sumatera Utara is suggested to improve education activity for the family of the patients, especially the family of the patients who will be discharged from the hospital that the patient treatment can be done by the patients’ family members and the relapse can be avoided and the current education of eveluation method can be applied. The nurses who are in charge of providing education to the family of the patients should be equipped with special education or training related to family education that the process of education to the family of the patients can be more optimal.
