Abstract
Hegel’s philosophy of right is commonly approached according to an alternative between his defense of the Prussian monarch and his recognition of liberalism, yet contemporary research opens up a new way of interpretation: republicanism. This line of political thinking, with its emphasis on the idea of the “common good”, is developed today notably by the intellectual history of civic republicanism of the Cambridge School and by the political theory of Philip Pettit. In this paper we intend to defend the following claim: while Hegel’s youth is marked by an admiration for the ethical life of the ancient city, his gradual recognition of the principles of modernity in the Jena period means his abandonment of ancient republicanism. Nevertheless, it is still relevant to read Hegel through the prism of republicanism, as his theoretical construction of individuality, civil liberty and political disposition in the Philosophy of Right demonstrates a position of modern republicanism.
