Abstract Equine assisted therapy - a qualitative study of therapeutic riding Assessor: Elizabeth Martinell Barfoed Equine assisted therapy is not a new treatment. During the 1500's riding was recommended for maintaining health or improving it, then riding was considered to have positive impact on both physical and mental health. In the 1600's horse-like machines were manufactured to achieve similar effects as riding. The aim of this work was to investigate how a variety of professionals looks at the professional development and the importance of horses in treatment. To get an insight into the professional development and the role of the horse, we conducted interviews with four therapists, two scientists and a physician. We also studied relevant literature on the topic. The theoretical concepts in the study was empowerment and professional theory; these were chosen to explain how equine assisted therapy is related to empowerment, what a profession is and what it takes to be a professional. The results showed that equine assisted therapy is to be regarded as a complement to other treatments. According to the therapists it has a potential as a treatment intervention – this is supported by research. We also came to the conclusion that the horse in many cases is not just physiotherapy, but also is regarded as the patients' best friend.Date
