Abstract

This thesis is concerned with political mobilization and the construction of a collective and social identity. The main purpose of the study is theoretical which emphasize their interaction. In order to do this I study the two phenomenons by seeing them as cases of each other. We cannot understand one of the two phenomenons without taking into account the other as well. In addition, the secondary aim of my thesis is empirical. I use the political transformation during the 70th and 80th on the eastern seaboard of Nicaragua to relate my theoretical analysis of political mobilization and the construction of identities. Nicaragua will provide my theoretical analysis with new insights. The most evident is the actor-oriented approach which often is forgotten in theoretical context. The result supplied by my work is that there exist a strong relationship between political mobilization and collective and social constructions of identities and that this is very evident in the case of the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua. The construction of a common identity of the coast is probably the most significant. Even if different minorities have less in common they will approach each other because they have the same enemy and the same goal, in the case of the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua, the Sandinista government and autonomy.
