The governance engagement continuum : food movement mobilization and the execution of power through governance arrangements

Abstract

There is debate concerning civil society and social movements’ engagement in governance. To be effective, must food movements be disruptive and adversarial, making change from the outside? Or, given the nature of more contemporary forms of movement organizing, are there opportunities for food movements to exercise power from within governance arrangements? This chapter addresses this question by presenting a governance engagement continuum as a way of conceptualizing food movements’ multiple roles in governance, with a focus on the multi-dimensional forms of power.
