Research Less Violent? Or the Ethics of Performative Social Science

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag entfalte ich eine Position, die Forschung als immanent gewalttätiges Handeln versteht: sie ringt dem "Fremden" Vertrautheit ab, indem sie sein "Anderssein" in eine Ordnung bringt und das Unbekannte auf diesem Weg zu Erkennbarem transformiert. Durch die Organisation und das (Unter-) Ordnen von Daten – eine Charakteristik jeglicher Analyse und Repräsentation – wird (um eine Foucaultsche Metapher heranzuziehen) die wilde Komplexität der Dinge gezähmt. Ambiguität und Differenz werden eingeebnet, und Unbestimmtheit wird durch "Ergebnisse" verdeckt. Zugleich bleiben moralische Wahlen, ethische und analytische Entscheidungen und die persönliche Beteiligung der Forschenden verborgen bzw. sie erscheinen als etwas quasi Natürliches und Unschuldiges. Genau hier hat performative Sozialwissenschaft die Chance, (sich) an die ethischen Konsequenzen von Analyse und Repräsentation zu erinnern, und sich der Verantwortung für die "Gewaltsamkeit des Zähmens" zu stellen. Diese Chance resultiert aus ihrem Potenzial zu zeigen, nicht zu erzählen; offen gegen die Zukunft zu sein – für andere/neue Ereignisse, Inhalte und Formen – statt der einen finalen Konklusion und dem Abschneiden zusätzlicher Optionen; und auch Kritik, Widerstand und politisches Handeln zu initiieren anstelle des Ringens um Übereinstimmung, Konformität und Gleichgültigkeit.

In this paper I construct an argument which positions research as an inherently violent activity in which the strange is made to appear familiar thereby forcing the otherness of the other into some kind of order, and transforming the unknown into the knowable. Through organising data and imposing an order—which is arguably the point of any analysis and representation—the wild profusion of things is tamed (to use a Foucauldian metaphor). Thus ambiguity and difference are flattened out, and indeterminacy is overlaid with "findings". Furthermore, research can also be seen as an activity in which the moral choices, ethical and analytical decisions, and personal investments of the researcher are secreted away and so are made to appear natural and innocent. I argue that there is an opportunity for performative social science research to remember the ethical consequences of analysis and representation and to take responsibility for the violence of taming the wild profusion of data. This opportunity resides in its potential to show, not tell; to be open to the future, another happening, another event rather than to settle for one final conclusion and close down other possibilities; and to provoke critique, resistance and political action rather than appeal for agreement, conformity and indifference.

En este trabajo formulo un argumento que sitúa a la investigación como una actividad inherentemente violenta, en la que lo extraño se vuelve familiar haciendo de la alteridad un orden y transformando lo desconocido en algo cognoscible. Organizando los datos e imponiendo un orden – que puede presentarse como el punto central de cualquier análisis y representación –, se domestica la salvaje profusión de cosas (utilizando una metáfora de FOUCAULT). Por lo tanto, la ambigüedad y la diferencia son eliminadas y la indeterminación se supera con los hallazgos. Además, la investigación también puede ser vista como una actividad en la que las elecciones morales, las decisiones éticas y analíticas, y las inversiones personales del investigador son segregadas y aparecen como naturales e inocentes. Argumento que hay una oportunidad para que la investigación de la ciencia social performativa recuerde las consecuencias éticas del análisis y la representación y asumir responsabilidad por la violencia de domesticar la salvaje profusión de datos. Esta oportunidad reside en su potencial para mostrar, no para decir; para estar abierto al porvenir, otro suceso, otro acontecimiento antes que conformarse con una conclusión final y cerrarse a otras posibilidades; y provocar la crítica, la resistencia y el movimiento político antes que buscar el acuerdo, la conformidad y la indiferencia.
