The article has its focus on Christian religious education and the Christian (theological) understanding of religious education (including the relationship between religious education and moral education), as opposed to a generic (religious studies) understanding of religious education across different religions. At the same time, it includes the awareness of today’s multi-religious contexts and the tasks of inter-religious education. It is based on a theological point of view but it also refers to theology’s multidisciplinary contexts, especially in the fields of general education and the social sciences but also in respect to legal aspects in the relationship between state-sponsored educational institutions like the school and issues of neutrality and commitment. The breakdown of the article follows the distinction between (1) a historical perspective concerning the development of Christian religious education, (2) a systematic perspective concerning theological as well as educational and societal rationales of Christian religious education, its goals and its shape, including the relationship between theology and the philosophy of education, (3) an empirical perspective which is of growing importance in this field both in terms of capturing the reality of religious education as well as in terms of evaluation, and which must be in close conversation with the social sciences and psychology, and (4) a practical perspective which, even if necessarily only briefly, refers to teaching methods as well as other practical tasks.Date

ISSPThe International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) is a continuing annual programme of cross-national collaboration on surveys covering topics important for social science research. It brings together pre-existing national social science projects and co-ordinates research goals, thereby adding a cross-national, cross-cultural perspective to the individual, national studies. Formed in 1983, the group develops topical modules dealing with important areas of social science as supplements to regular national surveys. Every survey includes questions about general attitudes toward various social issues such as the legal system, sex, and the economy. Special topics have included the environment, the role of government, social inequality, social support, family and gender issues, work orientation, the impact of religious background, behaviour, and beliefs on social and political preferences, and national identity. Participating countries vary for each topical module. The merging of the data into a cross-national dataset is performed by the Zentralarchiv fuer Empirische Sozialforschung, University of Cologne. A compact disc (CD-ROM) (archived under SN 3479) containing data and documentation for ISSP surveys carried out 1985-1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002 is available from the UKDA. This survey is the third in a series exploring the topic of 'religion'. The first survey on this topic was conducted in 1991 (available at the UKDA under SN 3062) and the second survey was conducted in 1998 (available at the UKDA under SN 4482). The 2008 survey is a partial replication of the 1998 study and the 1998 survey a partial replication of the 1991 study. The first partial release covers 35 countries across the world. Religion and Family LifePetts, Richard J. (MDPI - Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, 2019)There has been increased interest among scholars in recent decades focused on the intersection of family and religion. Yet, there is still much that is not well-understood in this area. This aim of this special issue is to further explore the influence of religion on family life. In particular, this issue includes a collection of studies from leading scholars on religion and family life that focus on ways in which religion and spirituality may influence various aspects of family life including family processes, family structure, family formation, family dissolution, parenting, and family relationships.  The studies included incorporate both qualitative and quantitative analyses, incorporate a number of different religious traditions, focus on religiosity among both adults and youth, and explore a number of important issues such as depression, intimacy, sexual behavior, lying, divorce, and faith transmission.
