Abstract
More than ever, academic research should consider the various interests of a growing number of partners. The case of the distinction between experimental treatment and innovative treatment serves to demonstrate the importance of sharing the responsibility of ethics in research; this case requires we rethink what separates clinical practice and human experimentation. Therefore, defining what is an “innovative practice” is not an easy task. Based on what criteria – and whose? – should we judge that a modification brought to an established practice is sufficiently important to be considered research? Upon the assessment of the current situation, the present study wishes to facilitate dialogue between those who have to manage this responsibility hand-in-hand, either the researcher or the clinician, the institution where the research is conducted and/or the person responsible for approving the research, either the public or the private organizations responsible for funding the research, as well as the ministries and professional organizations concerned.
