A comparative study of IMTF-related missionary training centers in the two-thirds world

AbstractThe rapid increase in the number of Two-Thirds world missionaries in recent years has created an unprecedented demand for establishment of adequate~ missionary training centers. This dissertation examines six missionary training centers located in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The research was conducted by means of personal and telephone interviews and a survey instrument that was distributed to each school. The purpose of the research was to discover the theological principles, the educational theory, and the training objectives that had guided the formation and development of each institution. Research questions concentrated on staff selection, student selection, teaching methodology, contextualization, holistic training, and program development. Schools were asked to comment on the extent to which they have adapted their program to the cultural context in which they are set, to the maturity of their students, and to the kind of ministry which their students will have in the future. Chapter four provides an introduction to each school. It examines the historical background that led to the foundation of the school and focuses on the distinctive characteristics and the particular emphases of its program. Chapter five compares and contrasts the responses that were given by each institution to the survey instrument. It indicates the serious attempts being made by these schools to adapt the way that they teach to culturally accepted teaching modes. It also shows how each of these centers is concerned to provide cross-cultural training that combines academic study, personal and spiritual development, and the acquisition of practical skills. Furthermore, it points out the ways in which these schools are seeking to prepare their students for cross-cultural life and ministry. The final chapter summarizes the findings of this research and identifies lessons that can be applied both to training institutions that already exist in the West and to new missionary training programs that are being developed in the Two-Thirds world.
