Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2010Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Social Sciences, 2010
Bağlama education and tuition is one of the most preferred branches in musical classes of mass education. This instrument, that is traditionally transferred and cherished through the relationship of master- apprentice; naturally encounters some learning and teaching difficulties in today? s educational approach. In order to figure out these problems better, first of all knowing the relation between the basic characteristics of the instrument bağlama and the subjects such as education, methodology, process, teaching, learning etc. would guide us. Especially in metropolises like Istanbul and in educational centers that are increasing in number day by day, educational activities are held to meet the expectations of people of all ages about bağlama education. Public education centers, cultural centers, classes presented by the municipalities, private training centers and individual practices are the areas of mass education on bağlama. It is evident in our research in these areas that two main topics cover the problems of bağlama teaching in mass education. These are; the structure of mass education itself, the problems about its operation and the methodological teaching problems of bağlama education. The thesis research we have prepared is the determination of the problems in bağlama education that are carried in the institutions and foundations of Istanbul which spare education on this area. Negotiations with bağlama teachers of these institutions are held; the issues of bağlama tuition in mass education are detected through surveys and interviews and finding out the reason of these drawbacks. This study that we have arranged in five sections in total begins with the introduction part as foreknowledge. In this section, the scope, aim and importance of our research are mentioned. In the following section, general knowledge such as formal education, mass education, methodology, process, teaching and learning are proved to be expressed, moreover, this instruments? basic characteristics are mentioned together with a short history of the instrument bağlama and mass education. The third part, which we surveyed bağlama tuition in mass education within the institutions and foundations of Istanbul, reports the introductions of varied educational centers and the views of teachers working there. The method of education predominantly in public education centers and related institutions under these centers is intended to be investigated; furthermore, the opinions of the experts experienced in this area are taken into account comprehensively. Music and Healing: Progress Towards ElysiumCoghlan, Michael; Wilson, Catherine Elizabeth (2017-07-26)This dissertation explores some of the many roles music, as a healing and nurturing art, plays in support of health and wellness. The fundamental question is how does music nurture, revive, animate, and inspire us to lead healthier and richer lives? Historical and modern sources, ranging from ancient philosophical works to reports of laboratory-based investigations, suggests that music is a remarkably positive and therapeutic element in the development of happier, healthier individuals, and well-adjusted societies. This study is the outcome of three deeply personal impulses: a) the experience of one who has personally benefited from music as a healing balm; b) the performer's desire to better understand the positive reactions, both emotional and physical, of audiences to specific musical selections and genres; and c) growing evidence that society is weakened and dulled (nor can foot feel, being shod) by the loss of the collective experience of live music due to the proliferation of digital technologies that facilitate access to a complexity of recorded music choices. There is compelling scientific documentation that experience listening to and creating live music when very young is especially beneficial. If the positive seeds of music are not planted in youth, the continued disintegration of the long-standing cultural musical institutions that serve a vital role in maintaining the social fabric is threatened.
The dissertation documents the authors own response to the diminution of opportunities for participation in live music: the establishment of Euterpe, a non-profit
charitable organization that presents live interactive classical and jazz performance programs for children in the public school system. The work is captured and analyzed in several ways: video recordings; art work produced by the children during Euterpe programs, and analysis extracted from previously published Qualitative Research Studies which were designed by leading scientific researchers in the field.

Games, gestures and learning in Basotho children's play songsDrury, J.D. (Dr.); Ntsihlele, Flora Mpho (2009-08-25)Colonialism in Africa had an impact on the indigenous peoples of Africa and this is shown in some of their games. The purpose of this study is to gain deeper insight into Basotho children's games and to demonstrate that the Western ideas of music and games are not necessarily the same as Basotho folk children's conceptions. The literature on Basotho children's games is reviewed though not much has been contributed by early and present Basotho writers who have generally approached it from the angle of literature without transcribing the songs. The Sesotho word for games (lipapali) embraces entertainment but a further investigation of it shows that aspects of learning of which the children were aware in some cases and in others they were not aware, are present. These are supported by musical examples and texts. The definition of play versus games is treated (with regard to infants and children) and these two concepts are still receiving constant attention and investigation by scholars and researchers as the words are synonymous and can be misleading. Infants' play is unorganised and spontaneous while games are organised structures. Furthermore, play and games are important in child development education. In this study, they are given attention in order to lay the foundation for the understanding and interpretation of games used in both cultures.

It is a misconception that African children's games are accompanied with music in the Western sense. Hence, the word `music' in Sesotho children's games takes on a different connotation from those in the West. Music' in Sesotho children's games embraces not only tunes that are sung, but game verses chanted in a rhythmic manner as opposed to spoken verse. Yet, mino (music) exists in Sesotho and is equivalent to the Western idea. These chanted rhythms and games are analysed against the backdrop of specific cultural dimensions for children depending on the function of the game played. The results of this study indicated that though the idea of music in children's games is not the same, games are an educational in character building and learning. Recommendations are made for educationists and music educators.
