Abstract
This report details the setting up of a program to assess the training potential of a new simulator (Device 2F64C) for training-SH-3 replacement helicopter pilots. Section 2 describes the training situation at the fleet readiness squadron prior to and during the transition to a new curriculum that resulted from an instructional system development programs Section 3 discusses factors impacting on syllabi content and the process used in developing syllabi for assessing training effectiveness of Device 2F64C. A description is provided ofthe development of detailed scripts to ensure effective implementation of a syllabus designed to realize the maximum potential of the new device. Section 4 outlines the experimental plan for assessing the training effectiveness of Device 2F64C. The training regimen for a control gro.n, performance data, and data collection process is described. Appendixes, amounting to approximately three-fourths of the report, include an excerpt of a training aid developed to facilitate learning of complex procedures and evaluate a computer authoring and editing system, two scenarios that are examples of a set developed for evaluating Device 2F64C, list of tasks on which the control group was trained, and a list of training tasks for the experimental group.
