In this second of two interviews, Major Rafael Saenz talks about serving in the fire support cell for the 1st Cavalry Division on Camp Liberty, Iraq, from October 2006 through December 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He discusses how the time spent in Kuwait was mostly wasted, the arrogance of the officers they were replacing, the scope of his duties across Baghdad, and the toxic leadership he had to deal with in his cell. He also talks about coming up with a pattern analysis of enemy indirect fire, being able to meet with his sister in Baghdad for Christmas Day, trying to execute their duties in a moral and ethical manner, and the enormous challenge he faced with reintegration after this deployment. Saenz closes this interview by stating that reintegration training is a valuable tool and that soldiers must seek professional help if they are experiencing problems.Date
