Student characteristics and ethic and humanistic aspects in the education of dentists: an analysis of two schools of dentistry in Bahia, Brazil Traditionally, Flexner and Gies report guides the education in the area of dentistry, which is based on the Cartesian paradigm that implies on mechanicism, bioligism and precocious specialization, that is, the technification of the dentist action, emphasis on curative odontology and individual assistance. In opposition to this model, recent thought in dentistry education claims for professionals who are able to work being aware of the complexity of the of actual working conditions and job opportunities, of the new policies for public health and of the evolution of knowledge on the health/disease process. Thus, the governments official guide for dentistry education suggests that the graduate should be a generalist who understands the social, cultural, behavioral, psychological, ecological, ethical, and legal determinants of the health/disease process in individuals as well as in the community; he must also have a solid technical and scientific background; be critical and reflexive; be able to work in interdisciplinary teams; and be able to answer to the communities social needs within his professional scope. The ethic and humanistic aspect on dentistry education has gain much emphasis in public policies for dentist attention considering particularly the National Policies for Humanization that works upon the humanization on the public health system through modifications of the education of the health professionals. The objective of this research is to see how this new perspectives influenced the education of dentists graduated from a private and a public university, especially on the ethic and humanistic aspect. Four different methodologies were used to collect information:documental analysis of the pedagogical guidelines, questionnaire for the students, non-directive interview with professors and users, and participant observation at the ambulatory. Data analysis was made using survey and qualitative methods. Results show that most of the students are females, like to work on the health professions, recognized the various difficulties of working as a professional and choose technical and scientific improvement to face competition. More than half work in other areas while studying. Most of them like the subject matters in the clinical area as opposed to the low interest shown for the areas of humanities and public health. The faculties pedagogical guidelines content the intention of educating professionals with solid ethical and humanistic background. Teachers and users of the services are aware of these purposes; nevertheless the reality of ambulatory attention shows a lack of critical thinking and real change in the everyday practice. The conclusion is that professional education in dentistry, in the two faculties under study, shows a stage of transition from the hegemonic technical and scientific knowledge to an awareness of the ethic and humanistic aspect considered necessary ingredients for a competent dentist.Date
