This report provides: a high-level understanding on women's travel patterns that builds the foundation for understanding the ways in which they use public transport and the degree to which this is met by the public transport systems; and a first-cut view on women's priorities in public transport and potential ideas for addressing them. The purpose of this report is to initiate a dialog on these questions and begin to develop a picture of the role transport currently plays in women's lives with an understanding of the further role it can play, given women's specific needs. This study was carried out in Mumbai. Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra and is the commercial and entertainment capital of India. Throughout this report the authors has used the term 'women' to refer to women and girls above the age of 16 as several of our survey respondents are students between the ages of 17 and 21. However, there is a need for a deeper understanding of the public transport needs of school- children; many of them use public transport to go to better schools that are father away from their homes. The study was on public buses and trains, however, other modes of public transport available in the city but not included in the study are black and yellow metered taxis and auto- rickshaws.Date

Making Transport Work for Women and Men : Tools for Task TeamsWorld Bank (Washington, DC, 2013-02-27)The primary objective of this report is
 to provide brief, relevant, and practical tools for World
 Bank task teams and their country counterparts to facilitate
 their work in addressing gender issues in transport policies
 and projects. This responds to the need, expressed by task
 teams, to repackage and condense existing gender and
 transport tools in formats more relevant to transport
 operations. These tools can also be used for training on
 gender and transport. The term tool was selected to convey
 the notion that these materials are nuts and bolts resources
 to be used when needed, and to emphasize that they are not
 requirements or directives.

Guidelines to Mainstream Gender in Transport ProjectsCaballero, Luz (World Bank, Washington, DC, 2008-08-18)The consideration of gender in transport
 is essential to ensure that transport is equitable,
 affordable, and provides access to resources and
 opportunities required for development. This note aims to
 provide guidance for mainstreaming gender into transport
 projects. It provides examples of how to do this, in
 relation to the various transport modes used in development
 operations by the World Bank, and well-known good practices
 in this area. The note is based on a number of key studies
 and projects from the World Bank and partner organizations,
 including the EU and UN. It highlights a number of
 constraints that women face in accessing transport
 infrastructure and services, as well as examples of
 interventions that could circumvent these constraints. Also,
 it identifies employment and participatory opportunities
 where women could play a role in the planning and
 implementation of transport operations. The information
 provided is not meant to be exhaustive but simply to draw
 attention to the most basic gender aspects in relation to transport.

Rise of the Anatolian TigersWorld Bank (Washington, DC, 2015-04)Turkey’s demographic and economic
 transformation has been one of the world’s most dramatic,
 with urban growth and economic growth proceeding hand in
 hand. Distinguishing Turkey from many other developing
 countries has been the pace, scale, and geographical
 diversity of its spatial and economic transformation.
 Fast-growing secondary cities bring added challenges that
 define Turkey’s second-generation urban agenda. New and
 differentiated service standards will need to be established
 across both dense urban built-up areas and small villages
 and rural settlements within the newly-expanded metropolitan
 municipality administrative area. These developments make
 planning, connecting, and financing important policy
 principles for Turkey’s second-generation urban development
 agenda. This policy brief frames a second-generation urban
 development agenda to support Turkey’s transition from upper
 middle income to high income.
